TikTok: The Next Big Thing in Video Marketing? (Infographic)

Want to revitalize your video marketing strategy in 2019? If so, you should consider joining TikTok – the hottest social media platform of the year.

The Incredible Rise of TikTok

Between the years 2017 and 2018, TikTok experienced a staggering growth of 395%. As of this year, the micro-vlogging app has been downloaded over one billion times – surpassing the social media behemoths Snapchat, Instagram, YouTube and even Facebook. The phenomenal growth of this relative newcomer has peaked the interest of many marketers and tech enthusiasts, prompting them to ask “where did this app come from?” and “why is it so popular?”

TikTok’s Origin Story

Originating from China, TikTok was initially launched in 2016 under the name Douyin. In 2017, it merged with Musical.ly – a popular lip-synching app – to form TikTok. The app quickly gained traction across the world; becoming the top downloaded app in many countries. By 2019, such was the success of the app that its parent company, Bytedance, secured a position as the world’s most valuable startup.

What is TikTok?

A social media platform, TikTok allows users to make and share micro videos of up to 15 seconds. While this does sound familiar to Vine and Snapchat, TikTok is set apart by its quirky musical functionalities. Users can score their content with songs and sound effects from the app’s huge musical library.

Who Uses TikTok?

Available in over 150 markets, TikTok is a truly global phenomenon. It has become the social media of choice for Gen Z with over 40% of the total worldwide user base aged between 16-24. Its user base is dedicated; spending an average of 52 minutes per day on the app.

What Kind of Content is on TikTok?

TikTok is full of lip-syncs, dance videos, practical jokes and sketches. In particular, the app is dominated by viral interactive hashtag challenges. For example, the Drake-inspired #InMyFeelings dance challenge generated approximately 5 million videos on TikTok compared to Instagram’s 1.7 million.
